Fun N Sun
VENUE This regatta has evolved over the years. The first one was held in Biscayne Bay (Miami) and after the regular racing was done, a "sailmaker's challenge" followed. A sailmaker was put on board each boat to see how they would fare. Soon, the regatta was moved to Key Largo, Florida, and found a home at Gilbert's. For many years, John and Judy Lamport organized the event and did an outstanding job to create a successful event. Unfortunately, the last time the Fun N Sun Regatta was held there was in 2004. Gilbert's was rumored to have been sold and expected to be developed into condos (or something like that). As a result, a new chapter opened in the history of the regatta, which turned out to be quite fortunate. Needing a new venue, the fleet captain, Gene Cochran, and the newly inducted race chair, Jennifer Brown, went about searching the keys for a suitable replacement. As chance would have it, the Upper Keys Sailing Club (UKSC) was very welcoming to our fleet and the prospect of hosting the event. Since then, Fleet 38 has formed a bond with UKSC and the regatta continues to blossom under the warm sunlight, sparkling waters and gracious hospitality offered by the Keys each January. What more could a sailor want? Sailing in the Keys during January...ah, that's relief!!! FORMAT A unique aspect of this regatta is the Night Race, which is conducted as a fun event and is scored separate than the rest of the regatta. It is held just after dusk on Friday night, and it is mainsail only. There is no crew limit, and on occasion it has been noted libations have flowed freely with those crews. Please don't misunderstand, this is a competitive race no matter how much fun we have! And even though there is a coveted trophy for the winner, there is also a curse...seems to be that no one who has ever won the Night Race has also won the regatta for the same year. PARTICIPANTS Due to the enticing weather, competitors from many states come to the regatta. We look forward to the year when we have more out-of-state boats than Florida boats. Thus far, we have had boats from Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama and even Ohio! Okay, that's not the only history...more to come.
